3 Biggest Mistakes I Made in My
First GATE Attempt

When I look back at my first GATE attempt, I realize that my mistakes were not about intelligence — they were about strategy. If you're preparing for GATE, avoiding these three mistakes alone can significantly improve your score.

Mistake #1

Ignoring High-Weight Subjects

One of my biggest mistakes was neglecting subjects like Discrete Mathematics and Engineering Mathematics, thinking they were either too tough or less important. In reality, these subjects carry a high weightage and are among the most scoring areas in the exam.

By skipping them, I not only lost easy marks but also reduced my overall confidence during the exam. The lesson is simple — never ignore high-weight subjects; master them instead.

Mistake #2

Lack of Proper Revision

I studied many topics, but I failed to revise them consistently. Without revision, concepts fade quickly — especially in a vast syllabus like GATE.

I used to move from one topic to another without strengthening what I had already learned. During the exam, I realized I had "seen" many questions before — but couldn't recall how to solve them.

🔁 Key Takeaway: Revision is what turns preparation into performance. Without it, even good study effort goes to waste.

Because of this, I suffered from three critical problems:

🏋️ Key Takeaway: Practice builds exam temperament. The more you solve, the more confident and efficient you become.

✅ Final Thoughts

These three mistakes cost me marks, rank, and confidence. But they also taught me what actually works in GATE preparation. If you avoid these, you're already ahead of where I was in my first attempt.
