From engineering mathematics, the topics covered were probability, calculus, numerical theory, algebra and transform theory to name a few. Candidates who have appeared for ECE paper have indicated that the number of numerical questions has increased while compared to the previous year as the ration of multiple choice questions and numerical questions for GATE 2018 seems to be 60:40. This refers that the candidates needed to time their paper so that the calculations can be done faster for numerical based questions. The recruitment of ECE engineers via GATE 2018 has been announced by public sector units like CEL, ONGC, BNPM, BBNL, IRCON and more.
From the GATE result analysis of ECE paper, it was found that the examination was comparatively difficult to last year with many trickier questions checking the basic knowledge of the candidates. This year, questions covered every topic mentioned in GATE syllabus with some topics being appeared for the first time. Some of the new topics that are covered in GATE 2018 include DFT in signals and systems, semiconductor memories in Digital, a lifetime of carriers in EDC, GSM in communications, etc. No changes were made in the pattern or direction of exam compared to previous year. In mathematics, questions were asked from the solution of linear equations, complex variables, mean value theorem, plotting graph of the exponential equation and from differential equations.
